In the summer of 2014, I was on a leisure trip in Sri Lanka and stumbled upon this beautiful young girl in the town of Kandy. She was on the corner of the road with her mother selling corn. I approached her because her eyes spoke to me and understood that she was in need of income, since her father had passed away two weeks before this photograph was taken. I never got to know her name therefore I chose to call her Princess because it is written on her shirt. She was kindhearted and sold us corn whilst her smile didn’t leave her face, even though she had just suffered an important loss in her life. Sri Lanka is a very beautiful country that is unfortunately filled with sad stories. Nonetheless, it upsets me that there are many children just like Princess that don’t have the means to afford an education. It should be our mission to provide education to everyone.
Knowledge is power and a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear.
